Council celebrates women of the Shire

Murrindindi Shire Council’s Mayor Charlie Bisset said International Women’s Day on 8 March was a great opportunity to pause and recognise the contribution of the Shire’s women in our lives.
“Women around the Shire make extraordinary contributions to the life of our Shire – whether in business, government, community or within the family,” she said.
“We have made great strides forward in recognising and rewarding women’s contributions. But it is clear there is much still to do.
“The theme of this year’s International Women’s Day is #PressforProgress. The idea of ‘pressing for progress’ is to further reduce gaps in gender parity so that we can reach our goal of achieving gender equality. Gender equality simply means that everyone has the same opportunity to make the most of their lives and talents. Gender simply shouldn’t be a factor that can stop this happening,” Cr Bisset said.
“A great example of this is the prominence women’s football has achieved recently – both at the national level and locally. It is so wonderful seeing this happening and to see the interest and support women’s football has attracted, including our local teams in Thornton and Yea.”
“Another great example is the prominence of women as winners, finalists and nominees in the 2017 Murrindindi Business Awards – women are very much at the forefront of innovation and economic development in the Shire”.
“We can all actively celebrate women’s achievements together,” added Cr Bisset.
