Mobile Library Update

18 December 2017

Mobile Library van will soon be back on the road

Murrindindi Shire Council is pleased to advise that its much-loved Mobile Library Service, delivered by the large van, will be back on the road in early 2018.

Deputy Mayor and Community Services Portfolio Councillor, Sandice McAulay said she was excited by the prospect of the van’s return, but had hoped it would be back on the road by Christmas.

“We were planning to have the van back on the road before the end of the year, but we found out about a funding opportunity for libraries through the Victorian Government a few months ago and decided to apply for it.

“We found out last week that we were successful! We received $40,800 to rejuvenate the Mobile Library under the Victorian Government’s Living Libraries Infrastructure Program.

“What this means is that we will be able to give the van a refresh, with a brand new look on the outside and also refit the internal reception area – and all at no cost to our ratepayers.   The internal refit is important as it will enable us to deliver Council’s Customer Services on the van, in addition to library services”.

“We plan to launch the revitalized Mobile Library Service across the Shire early in 2018 when these works are complete.  In addition to traditional Mobile Library stops in Eildon, Marysville, Buxton, Strath Creek and Flowerdale, we are also extending the service to Glenburn, Toolangi and Highlands as these locations are also remote from our library branches.

“We will soon take receipt of a new Prime Mover to replace the one that was written off in an accident last year.   A decision to replace the Prime Mover and resume the full Mobile Library service follows feedback from a community survey we conduced last year.  This showed overwhelming support in the community for resumption of the full Mobile Library service in recognition of the role it plays in connecting communities, supporting children’s educational needs and the health and well-being of our people, including seniors.

“Our conversation with the community showed there is also interest in communities in Glenburn, Toolangi and Highlands to have a Mobile Library service.  Through our engagement process, the community helped us to find a solution to extend our service to these communities in a cost-effective way,” added Cr McAulay.

“We wrote to existing Mobile Library users earlier this year advising of the change. The new timetable will include a reduction in hours at some locations to enable an increase in others, including to the three new locations.  These changes will take effect when the van comes back into service in 2018,” said Cr McAulay.

Cr McAulay said that in addition to the new schedule, the other major change to the service is the introduction of the delivery of Council Customer Services via the mobile library van.

“A decision to also provide Council’s Customer Services on the Mobile Library means we are getting maximum bang for our buck out of the Mobile Library service. It will also help people who live in our small towns to access a range of other Council services at a convenient location. This will be an easy way for people to pay rates and other Council fees and charges such as home care, pet registration, replacement animal tags, infringement notices, disabled parking permits and library fines.”

“Of course, we will continue to deliver the current reduced mobile library service, via a 4WD vehicle, in the interim.  The timetable for that remains unchanged”, added Cr McAulay.
