On Wednesday 31 October, the Victorian Electorate Commission officially started accepting nominations from aspiring parliamentary representatives (candidates) to run in the forthcoming Victorian State Election.

Murrindindi Shire Council Mayor Sandice McAulay said so far four candidates had declared their intention to stand for the Eildon Electorate.

“Prospective candidates for registered political parties have until 8 November to register and independent candidates have until 9 November to register to be able to stand for the 24 November election, so we may see some new faces yet,” Cr McAulay said.

“In the meantime, Council and UGFM have teamed up to invite the four declared candidates to public meetings so they can answer your questions and talk about what they plan to do if elected,” Cr McAulay said.

“Accordingly, Labor candidate Sally Brennan, Greens candidate Ken Deacon, Independent candidate Michelle Dunscombe and Liberal candidate Cindy McLeish will be at Alexandra Shire Hall on 13 November and Ellimatta Youth Inc in Kinglake on 20 November to meet with our community.

“I encourage you to make a note in your diary of these events - it’s really important that our parliamentary representatives hear directly from the community about our priorities and expectations.

“If you can’t make it along to one of the events, UGFM will be broadcasting the sessions live across the Shire. Listeners are encouraged to get involved from home via www.slido.com, where you can post questions to candidates live or in advance of the sessions. To join in, just go to www.slido.com on your phone, tablet or computer, enter the event code stateelection with no spaces and press ‘join’. When submitting a question please remember to include your name and whether your question is for a specific candidate or to all candidates,” Cr McAulay said.

“Council will also be offering free community transport to and from the sessions for Shire residents who are unable to arrange other transportation. If you live in the Marysville Triangle, Eildon, Thornton, Yarck or Yea areas of the Shire, transport is available for the session being held at the Alexandra Town Hall on Tuesday 13 November at 6.30pm. If you live in the Kinglake Ranges, Flowerdale, Glenburn, Strath Creek or Toolangi areas of the Shire, transport is available for the session being held at Ellimatta Youth Space on Tuesday 20 November at 6.30pm. For more information or to book please phone Council on 5772 0333.

“And be sure to tune your radio to UGFM or listen at www.ugfm.org over the coming weeks for their pre-election coverage,” Cr McAulay added.
