Wombats
An Order in Council, made in 1984 and remade in 1997 under the Wildlife Act 1975, unprotected the Common Wombat (Vombatus ursinus) in 193 parishes in eastern Victoria. Landowners or occupiers who are engaged in rural production, and permanent employees of these landowners or occupiers, could take or destroy wombats only by centre-fire rifle of .222 calibre or larger without the need to obtain authorisation under the Wildlife Act.
The Order in Council has been revoked which means that the Common Wombat is now protected everywhere in Victoria. It is illegal to disturb or to destroy protected wildlife without an Authority to Control Wildlife (ATCW) from the Conservation Regulator.
