Composting and Worm Farming

Adding compost to your garden provides essential nutrients for plant growth, it helps to fertilise soil and creates a healthy environment for plants and crops.

Why is composting and worm farming important?

Compost plays a crucial role towards building a sustainable environment for future generations. By composting food waste you are diverting organic waste from landfill and reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the environment. Around 8% of greenhouse gases heating the planet are caused by food waste - if food waste was a country, it would be the third biggest emitter of greenhouse gases after USA and China.

How do I start a compost or worm farm?

It's easy to build your own compost or worm farm to recycle your organic waste at home. You can purchase a purpose-built worm farming kit or there are also many inexpensive options to get you started including

  • outdoor bins, with or without ventilation and ground holes
  • tumblers
  • open enclosures
  • heaps
  • indoor / bench top composters
