Resource Recovery Centres and Landfill
For more information on what is available to assist with cleaning up after the January 2026 Bushfires - visit the January 2026 Bushfire Clean-up and waste page.
Murrindindi residents can still dispose of all bushfire-related waste at Council Transfer Stations.
Council is continuing to advocate to State Government that the full cost of disposing bushfire waste continues until June 2027, however, at this stage only the waiver for the EPA levies for disposal at regional landfill sites has been extended until 28 October.
A Domestic Bushfire Waste Gate Fee of $47.32 / m3 will now apply from 1 July for general bushfire waste taken to the Resource and Recovery Centres by affected residents. Loads of bushfire waste exceeding 3m3 and loads of building rubble (containing bricks, concrete, soil) will continue to be directed to the Alexandra Landfill where the appropriate fees will apply and the EPA levy will be removed.
To assist residents and ratepayers to appropriately dispose of household and business waste and recyclable materials, Council operates five Resource Recovery Centres, and the Alexandra Landfill.
While our Resource Recovery Centres are open to anyone during opening hours, the Alexandra Landfill is open to account holders during opening hours, and to the public by appointment during opening hours.
The Resource Recovery Centres do not accept cash. EFTPOS is available at all the centres.
Please note our Resource Recovery Centres will remain closed on Total Fire Ban days.

Unacceptable Items
The following items are not accepted at any of our Resource Recovery Centres (RRCs):
Non-recoverable or non-recyclable material exceeding 3 cubic metres
Loads of non-recyclable materials exceeding 3 cubic metres (general household waste, building waste, etc) will need to be disposed direct to landfill. The Alexandra Landfill will accept waste by appointment only. Appointments can be made by calling Council on (03) 5772 0333.
Asbestos
The use of asbestos is banned nationally.
While our Resource Recovery Centres do not accept asbestos, Alexandra Landfill will accept small quantities of asbestos from domestic sources only. Asbestos can be disposed by making an appointment at the landfill by calling Council on (03) 5772 0333.
Asbestos must be thoroughly sealed in double wrapped plastic. If the asbestos is not sealed correctly the landfill operator reserves the right to reject the waste. However, Council recommends that asbestos only be handled or removed by certified licensed asbestos removalists.
Chemicals and solvents
Chemicals and solvents are not accepted at RRCs, and it is important that these are NOT placed in your household garbage bin. These items present issues with hazardous materials entering landfill, which can expose landfill operators to hazardous or toxic chemicals, and cause severe damage to the environment.
ChemClear is an agricultural and veterinary (agvet) chemical collection service which can be utilised to collect any agvet chemicals which are no longer needed.
Sustainability Victoria often runs Detox Your Home events, where residents can drop off unwanted household chemicals. These events are not restricted to those who live in certain municipalities.
Syringes
Council provides a free sharps disposal service (for used hypodermic needles and syringes)and free sharps containers to Murrindindi Shire residents.
Paint
Paint is not accepted at RRCs within the Shire, however there permanent drop off facilities available outside of the Shire:
Liquid waste
Liquid waste of any kind (except used motor oil) is not accepted at our RRCs.
Please note that not all of our RRCs accept the full range of waste items:
- The Marysville RRC does not accept soft furnishings (including mattresses and couches of any size), tyres of any kind, motor oil or any form of electronic waste including fluorescent tubes.
- The Eildon RRC does not accept any form of electronic waste including fluorescent tubes.
This is due to facilities at the RRCs and contractual arrangements.
Green Waste Disposal
Green waste can be disposed at each of our five Resource Recovery Centres. This includes domestic quantities of grass clippings, leaves, garden trimmings, branches and tree trunks.
Residents can dispose of green waste for free at the following times:
- during October and November in 2025, in preparation for the CFA declared Fire Danger Period
- after a declared emergency or major storm event
Outside of these times a fee of $21.30 per cubic metre will apply.
For green waste to be acceptable, it must not be mixed up with other materials. Branches and tree trunks must be no longer than 1.5 m in length and be less than 25 cm in diameter. Branches and stumps larger than this will continue to incur a fee.
Residents need to show evidence they live in Murrindindi Shire (such as a rate notice, or a current photo ID showing their Murrindindi Shire residential address).
Different charges apply for commercial volumes of green waste and green waste from businesses.
Residents have access to free mulch year-round, when available.
Alexandra Landfill
The Alexandra Landfill is available to accept large loads of domestic and commercial waste. The landfill is licensed to accept putrescibles and non-putrescibles waste and asbestos of domestic origin only.
The Alexandra Landfill is available to be accessed Monday to Friday, 8.00 am – 3.00 pm. The landfill is closed on weekends and public holidays.
