In a council election, there are two types of voters:
- State-enrolled voters; and
- Council-enrolled voters
If you're not State-enrolled or Council-enrolled, then you may still apply for Council-enrolment if you apply directly to us and you are:
- Over 18 years, and
- A property owner, occupier or
- You represent a corporation in the Shire.
However, the Council election roll closes a few months before an election, so you may be unable to enrol or change your enrolment address until after that election. Hard copies of each application form are available to collect from:
- Alexandra Library - 49 Grant Street
- Alexandra Customer Service - 28 Perkins Street
- Kinglake Library and Customer Service - 19 Whittlesea-Kinglake Road
- Yea Library and Customer Service - 15 The Semi Circle
- Mobile Library and Customer Service
If you were Council-enrolled for the 2024 Council elections, then you will also be enrolled for any Council bi-elections up until the 2028.
If you are State-enrolled with the Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC), and your address is within the Shire, you must vote in Council elections. If you don't vote, you may get a fine.

If you are not a State-enrolled voter, there are 3 ways you may be entitled to vote in Murrindindi Shire Council elections. If you don't vote, you might get a fine.
You own a property
If you own a property within Murrindindi and live elsewhere, or if you own and live in a Murrindindi property and you are not an Australian citizen, then you can enrol to vote.
- Up to 2 owners per property can enrol to vote (1 vote each).
- You will remain enrolled for the next and all future elections.
- You can resign your enrolment for the property at any time.
- You can enrol even if you are not an Australian citizen.

You rent a property
If you are a tenant and pay rates for a property in Murrindindi, then you can enrol to vote.
- Up to 2 renters per property can enrol to vote (1 vote each).
- You will only be enrolled for the next election (you must re-enrol for all elections thereafter).
- You can resign your enrolment for the property at any time.
- You can enrol even if you are not an Australian citizen.

On behalf of a corporation
Whether you own or rent the property, if you are the director or secretary of a company that pays rates, then you can vote.
- You can enrol even if you are not an Australian citizen.
- You only will be enrolled for the next election (you must re-enrol for all elections thereafter).
- You must agree to being appointed the corporation's representative.
- Only 1 person can apply to be the representative.
