Temporary Buildings
If you lost a shed or other building during the January 2026 bushfires, this information may be useful for you.
A temporary building or structure replaces one that was destroyed or damaged and is used for the same purpose but on a temporary basis.
What is a temporary building?
- A temporary building or structure replaces one that was destroyed or damaged by the January 2026 bushfire and is used for the same purpose but on a temporary basis.
- Temporary buildings allow for immediate replacement while seeking appropriate permissions and undertaking construction for permanent replacement buildings.
- This can include sheds, shipping containers or other structures.
- Council must be notified of all temporary buildings and some may need approval.
Am I eligible for a temporary building?
Yes, if a building has been destroyed or damaged by the January 2026 bushfires.
Temporary building requirements
Temporary buildings can only be placed on the affected property.
Temporary buildings or containers must be completed within 18 months of the original building being damaged or destroyed.
Temporary buildings can only be used for a maximum of three years.
Total floor area of temporary buildings must not exceed 100 square meters without Council approval.
Siting of temporary buildings within the following overlays may require Council approval and may need to be referred to other relevant agencies:
- Bushfire Management Overlay
- Erosion Management Overlay
- Heritage Overlay
- Land Subject to Inundation Overlay
- Floodway Overlay
Registering with Council
The following information is to be provided to Council:
- Address
- Full copy of title
- Details of use
- Site plan showing location of temporary building or container
