Erosion and soil stability

Bare soil after fire is vulnerable to erosion, especially during heavy rain.

Contact the GBCMA for fencing incentives to protect riparian vegetation on waterways.

Immediate actions

  • Leave burnt vegetation and logs in place
  • Keep stock off burnt paddocks until groundcover returns
  • Slow water using sediment fences, logs or straw along contours. For more information, visit the Agriculture Victoria website.

Watch for

  • Gullies forming on slopes
  • Sediment entering dams or creeks
  • Track and driveway washouts
  • Landslips on steep hill country

Longer term

  • Encourage regeneration
  • Replant where there is no regeneration
  • Seek advice if erosion is severe or worsening
