Erosion and soil stability
Bare soil after fire is vulnerable to erosion, especially during heavy rain.
Contact the GBCMA for fencing incentives to protect riparian vegetation on waterways.
Immediate actions
- Leave burnt vegetation and logs in place
- Keep stock off burnt paddocks until groundcover returns
- Slow water using sediment fences, logs or straw along contours. For more information, visit the Agriculture Victoria website.
Watch for
- Gullies forming on slopes
- Sediment entering dams or creeks
- Track and driveway washouts
- Landslips on steep hill country
Longer term
- Encourage regeneration
- Replant where there is no regeneration
- Seek advice if erosion is severe or worsening
