Where to start
Managing recovery when you don’t live locally
If you’re a non‑resident ratepayer, landholder or farmer, managing fire recovery can feel overwhelming — especially if you’re not nearby or are visiting infrequently.
This page outlines practical first steps and helps you understand what can happen now, and what may take more time.
First steps to consider
You don’t need to do everything at once. Many recovery actions can happen in parallel.
Early priorities may include:
Clean‑up isn’t the only starting point
While clean‑up is important, it is not always on the critical path for recovery.
Even if clean‑up has not started, you may still be able to:
- engage designers or builders
- begin planning or building permit discussions
- organise fencing repairs
- gather quotes or plan works for later.
Taking these steps early can help maintain momentum and reduce stress.
Connect with your community
Many non‑resident landholders are coordinating recovery from a distance, this can make you feel isolated with no one to talk to. If that’s you:
- consider attending one of the recovery events to connect with the local community
- drop in to a Fire Recovery Hub if you are in the area
- call Council on (03) 5772 0333 and we may be able to connect you with your local community hub.
Find the information you need
Use the pages in this section for more detailed guidance, depending on your situation:
Clean‑up and waste
Clean‑up pathways, waste disposal options, Resource Recovery Centres, opening hours, and what materials can and can’t be accepted.
Fences, essential water and control lines
Information on fencing repairs and essential rural infrastructure following fire impact.
Insurance
Insurance considerations and how insurance processes may interact with clean‑up and recovery.
Support programs and wellbeing
Recovery support programs and wellbeing services. Some programs have eligibility requirements and may not apply to non‑resident properties.
What if I am ineligible for support?
Most recovery support is targeted to primary residences or permanent residents. As a non‑resident ratepayer, some assistance may not apply to your circumstances.
Even where formal support is limited:
- registering your impact is still important, call the Emergency Recovery Hotline on 1800 560 760
- planning and preparatory work can continue
- Council may be able to direct you to the right information.
