Council reminds the community that the Great Victorian Rail Trail remains closed until further notice between Merton and the Cheviot Tunnel, and between Cathkin and Spring Creek Road, Fawcett.
The trail was significantly impacted by the January 2026 fires, followed by major storm events in February and June.
Hazardous tree removal works have now been completed, with almost 500 tonnes of damaged trees removed from the trail corridor. However, significant damage remains.
Council still needs to assess embankment erosion, trail surface damage and underground culverts before the trail can be considered safe. In addition, 15 bridges remain impassable. The trail is not safe for public use and attempting to access closed sections may place people at risk.
Council is advocating to the State and Federal Governments for funding to restore the affected sections of the trail. At this stage, there is no confirmed funding pathway for the extensive rehabilitation works required.
Please respect all closure signage and stay out of closed sections of the trail.
