Murrindindi Shire Council stands united with fellow councils and elected representatives across our region in condemning the violent attack on Federal Member for Indi, Dr Helen Haines.
Our thoughts are with Helen, her family, her staff and everyone affected by this deeply distressing incident.
Helen has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to our communities, public service and respectful democratic debate.
We may not always agree with our elected representatives, and we have every right to question and challenge them. But threats, intimidation and violence have absolutely no place in our communities or our democracy. Disagreement must never come at the expense of our humanity. We are better than this.
Mayor Damien Gallagher has joined fellow mayors and Members of Parliament in signing a united statement of solidarity with Helen. Together, we stand for respect, decency and the right of every person to serve their community without fear.
Today, we stand with Helen. And together, we must demand better, expect better and be better.
