Project overview
Breakaway Bridge, Acheron, was heavily damaged during the October 2022 flood event. While emergency works were carried out to protect the site, engineering investigations found the existing bridge could not be repaired and would need to be replaced.
Funding has now been secured through the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA), allowing the project to move forward.
About the new bridge
The replacement bridge will be a two-lane concrete structure designed to meet modern transport and safety standards. The bridge deck will be raised to improve flood resilience and the bridge will be repositioned slightly to improve its alignment with the road.
The design also allows for a future shared walking and cycling path should funding become available.
Construction timeline
Site preparation works are expected to begin in October 2026. Construction of the new bridge is scheduled to commence in December 2026 following removal of the existing bridge.
Works are expected to take approximately 10 months, subject to weather, site conditions and cultural heritage requirements, with the bridge anticipated to reopen to traffic in November 2027.
Community update
The replacement bridge will restore an important transport connection for residents, visitors, emergency services and local businesses.
Council understands the community has been waiting a long time for the project to progress and appreciates residents' patience and support throughout the planning, approvals and funding process. Project updates will be provided as construction progresses.
Council is also exploring opportunities to reuse timber salvaged from the existing bridge and will invite the community to share ideas for future uses of this historic material.
