Urban Tree Strategy 2025

The Urban Tree Strategy is Murrindindi Shire Council’s first strategy for our urban forest. At the heart of the Strategy is the recognition of the vital role that trees, and other types of greening, play in providing environmental, economic, social, and health and wellbeing benefits.

Trees play a vital role in keeping our communities cool, improving wellbeing, supporting wildlife and enhancing the character of our towns. This Strategy will guide how we protect, maintain and expand our urban forest across Murrindindi Shire.

By 2035, the Strategy aims to:

  • Increase canopy cover towards a long-term target of 40% in each township
  • Strengthen the resilience of our urban forest to climate change, extreme weather and pests
  • Improve diversity of tree species and ages
  • Deliver best-practice tree management across Council
  • Create fairer access to shade and greenery across all communities
  • Support more community involvement in caring for our urban forest

This is a shared vision for a thriving, diverse and resilient urban forest that benefits everyone , now and into the future.
