Murrindindi Shire Council is encouraging community members to sign up for Australia’s largest community-based environmental event, Clean Up Australia Day on Sunday 3 March 2024.

In 2023, local volunteers cleaned up seven tonnes of rubbish, contributing to a nationwide result. For many years, residents in Murrindindi Shire have enthusiastically participated in Clean Up Australia Day events, improving local areas by removing waste from our roadsides, parklands, and bushland sites.

Roll up your sleeves and organise a Clean Up Australia Day event or join someone else’s event. It’s easy to do and it’s a great opportunity to do something positive for our environment and your local community.

To register or to find an event near you, visit the Clean Up Australia Day website: cleanup.org.au/cleanupaustraliaday

Clean Up Australia will provide registered events with a Clean Up Kit containing gloves and bags and other resources.

Council will support community events registered on the Clean Up Australia Day website. We can provide free waste collection and disposal either by supplying and removing bins or a pass to the nearest Council Resource Recovery Centre.

Organisers of public clean up events can apply to Council for reimbursement for refreshments for their hard-working volunteers. This will help provide drinks and snacks for participating volunteers, up to $100 per public event.

If registering a clean up event, call Council on (03) 5772 0333 to discuss how Council can assist.

Other clean up events include Business Clean Up Day on Tuesday 27 February and School Clean Up Day on Friday 1 March.

Council’s Sustainability, Assets and Emergency Management Portfolio Councillor Karine Haslam said “Every year, the Murrindindi Shire community comes together for Clean Up Australia Day, demonstrating our shared commitment to preserving the natural beauty of our region. So, get your family or friends, your colleagues, classmates or clubmates together and register to host a clean up event! Murrindindi Shire is a beautiful place, let’s join with neighbours to show our pride and maintain its beauty. Whether you’re organising an event or joining one, every effort counts. Let’s work together to keep Murrindindi Shire beautiful for our children and future generations.”
