We have listened, and are now taking action. Murrindindi Shire Council has adopted the final amended version of the Climate Change Action Plan (CCAP) at the October 2023 Scheduled Meeting of Council. The CCAP is the roadmap to realise the targets and policies set out in the Climate Change Policy 2022, which aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2035 and help the community deal with the effects of climate change.

Council engaged with the community on the draft CCAP in March 2023, focusing on the opportunities for council to support community-led action. A series of potential actions were presented to community members to indicate key priorities, such as increasing renewable energy and storage technology, facilitating bulk buy programs for climate-safe technologies, expanding support for community nature restoration efforts, and incorporating a climate change stream into Council’s existing Grants and Sponsorship program.

The consultation process received positive feedback from the community and identified gaps and improvements to the CCAP, such as supporting youth action, recognising the increased risk of water scarcity as well as improved sustainable water use. Council has incorporated these comments into the final version of the CCAP.

Council thanks the community for their valuable input and looks forward to working together to implement the CCAP and achieve our shared vision of a climate-resilient and low-carbon future.

Murrindindi Shire Council’s Mayor John Walsh said "The adoption of the CCAP is a significant milestone for our council and our community. It reflects our commitment to take action on climate change and ensure a sustainable future for generations to come. I am proud of the collaborative effort that has gone into developing this plan and I thank everyone who has contributed their ideas and feedback."
