New Kerbside Collection Services for Murrindindi Shire

Murrindindi Shire Council is pleased to announce the introduction of a new 4-bin kerbside collection service, starting July 2025. This new service aims to enhance waste management practices, aligning with the Victorian Government's policy requirements to improve recycling services, reduce landfill waste, and minimise greenhouse gas emissions.

The 4-bin service will include the following bins, collected at different frequencies:

• General waste – red bin, collected fortnightly
• Mixed recycling – yellow bin, collected fortnightly
• Food and garden organics (FOGO) – green bin, collected weekly
• Glass recycling – purple bin, collected monthly

To determine the most suitable service model, Council engaged with the community in late 2022, receiving valuable feedback from over 200 residents. The overwhelming support for the 4-bin service helped shape the design of the service.

Now, Council is seeking further input from the community on the finer details of the services, as outlined in the draft Kerbside Waste and Recycling Services Policy. This Policy includes proposed changes to collection routes, mandatory zones for the 4-bin service, optional FOGO service zones, and opt-in options for commercial and industrial properties.

Residents are invited to provide feedback on the draft Policy by visiting our online engagement platform, The Loop.

Council will provide additional guidance to ensure the community understands these changes and how to adapt to the new collection services when they are introduced next year.

Council’s Sustainability, Assets and Emergency Management Portfolio Councillor Karine Haslam said “Council is preparing to transition to a 4-bin collection service from mid-2025. We aren’t alone in this change, with all other Victorian councils required to introduce 4stream household disposal system in line with the State Government’s policy. While we’ve decided on the format and frequency of our kerbside collection services, based on feedback gathered from the community in late 2022, we’d like to see what our community thinks about some of the finer details outlined in our Kerbside Waste and Recycling Services Policy. This Policy will guide the roll out of the 4-bin services so it’s important we get valuable feedback from our residents to make sure the transition goes as smoothly as possible. We’re also planning a comprehensive education campaign to help our community make the most of the new kerbside collection services. We are excited to move our Shire closer towards a circular economy, for the benefit of our community and the environment.”
